About Artist
I grew up in a city but I’ve always loved the outdoors. As a scout, I’d find a spot by a stream to sit still and let the woods come alive around me.
Then life intervened and I worked in an office for years. All the time things were changing — life sped up and cyberspace became a substitute for the real world. But I always kept my affection for the outdoors and the small, familiar little friends who lived there. They’re a recurring theme in my turned and carved works.
Sunfish, koi, trout and deep sea hatchetfish are in the “Fishbowls” series. Shells found on beach walks inspired my “Tidal Treasures.” Little birds, robins, blackbirds, jays and kingfishers appear on bowls and platters.
In a world that’s increasingly speeding away from contact with our natural roots, it’s important to keep a reminder of the companions that share our world.
My identity as an artist is based not only on natural themes but also a marriage of tools and design. I’m primarily a woodturner, but I include carving in most of my designs. The handwork I do in finishing ensures that my work has an appealing tactile quality.
