November 18th, 2023:
PAW General Meeting 2023-11-18
Area Woodturners met at 6708 Corsair in the Prescott Airpark on November 18, 2023. President Mark Oglesby called the meeting to order at 12: 00 p.m. 40 members attended in person and 4 via Zoom.
Membership Director Jay Loden introduced new member Tim Waldburger. Treasurer Dennis Egan said that the Holiday Sale on November 11, 2023 was our best sale ever. Sellers grossed over $8,000.
President Mark Oglesby conducted election of officers for 2024. There being no additional candidates, the slate of nominees was voted on verbally. Officers for 2024 are:
- President Ric Davis
- Vice President Chuck Brown
- Treasurer Dennis Egan
- Secretary Marge Hunt
- Program Director Bob Zimmerman
- Membership Director Jay Loden
Mark announced that the Tuesday Demo following today’s demonstration will be on November 28 – after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Show & Tell is always inspiring. Our folks do such good work! Much of it is original; however, someone did quote the disclaimer “Someone did my idea before I did.”
Mark talked about the up-coming Holiday Party. There will be an ornament exchange and the identity of the Turner Of The Year will be revealed. There will be drawings for gift certificates and other door prizes.
Mark noted that donations for the Stocking Stuffer are needed. The PAW booth is popular at the Stocking Stuffer, and it results in a big boost to our treasury.
We watched a video on Spontaneous Combustion, cautioning everyone about storing oily rags. While the video itself had been “enhanced” for dramatic effect, the need to carefully store oily rags is real. There was footage of real fires. The accelerant used was linseed oil. Rags used with linseed oil should be air-dried before storing.
Ric Davis announced, and Karel Armstrong clarified, the opportunity to sell our work. There will be a symposium in Camp Verde on April 7, 8 and 9, 2024. PAW members could act as vendors to the spinners from across Arizona who will attend. Karel Armstrong would be the best contact for more information.
Jerry Sugars announced that this will be his last year of filming our meetings. We need someone to run the camera. This would be a great time to begin training with Jerry.
Doug Rowe is again collecting Freedom Pens to send to our troops who are deployed.
Program Director Bob Zimmerman was our demonstrator today. He showed us how he turns an inside-out ornament. He began with four pieces of wood that were exactly square, then grouped into one larger rectangle. He turned the center of the rectangle, then released all four pieces and put them together with the turned face inside. Magic! Bob displayed ornaments he has turned that are 4-sided, 3-sided and 6-sided.
Zimm likes to keep “playing” – seeing how far he can push an idea.
The meeting adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Marge Hunt, Secretary
