Eccentric Spindles
May 16, 2025
The WIT group met at Kathy Allen’s shop where she instructed the group on planning and making eccentric spindles for wig stands. Each person had pre-rounded a spindle blank so they were ready to turn during the workshop. Kathy demonstrated how to draw out a plan for the spindle, mark and label it on the wood, and how to turn two of the eccentric parts of the piece. At first everyone was nervous to turn it, but with some guidance, everyone was soon relieved to find that it was easier than it had looked when they started turning their own project. By the end of the session, everyone had all of their eccentric sections turned and would later complete the parts ‘on center’ and add the tenons to complete the spindle. Donna’s granddaughter will be a great future turner! She was all eyes while ‘grandma’ was learning the steps so Donna could try eccentric turning later.
