General Meeting Minutes
November 19, 2022:
PAW General Meeting 2022-11-19
Prescott Area Woodturners met on November 19, 2022 at 6708 Corsair in the Prescott Airpark. President Ken Allen called the meeting to order at 1 :00 p.m. with a welcome to those present as well as those on Zoom.
Membership Chairman Jay Loden announced that we have 3 new members, and reminded everyone that 2023 dues are now due.
Ken Allen talked about the Holiday Dinner scheduled for December 5, 2022.
Ken announced that Bruce Peek will now be the liaison for Beads of Courage. After the break today, Bruce will bring us up to date regarding Beads of Courage.
There being no further nominations for Board positions, President Ken Allen announced that the election Officers for the 2023 Board of Directors would be done by voice vote. The following Board of Directors was unanimously elected:
- President, Mark Oglesby
- Past President, Ken Allen
- Treasurer, Dennis Egan
- Secretary, Marge Hunt
- Program Director, Bob Zimmerman
Program Director Ric Davis introduced Glenn Lucas as a premier turner. Lucas appeared via Zoom from his home studio, which is located about one hour South of Dublin, in Ireland. Glenn has been turning for about 33 years, and now sells through his website. Because this is an Interactive demonstration, Lucas promised to answer any questions. However, his narrative was so detailed that there were few questions.
Lucas’ inspiration for today’s project was a 1,000 year-old Viking Bowl. The wood he used was Irish Sycamore. The demonstration covered shaping the bowl, sanding and finishes. Glenn sent a limited-time link to his recording of today’s demonstration.
After the break, Bruce Peek’s discussion of Beads of Courage began with thanks to Walt Spencer for his years of coordinating this project.
Bruce said that, after watching a You Tube video describing Beads of Courage, he felt that it was important to continue. His research revealed Covid-related problems. There are only FOUR people working this world-wide program, which means that communication is often delayed weeks if not months. PAW was never registered with BoC; that is now done. When donating a bowl, DO fill out an “In-kind Donation Form”. The AA W website has size requirements and the donation form. Kathy Allen has identifying beads at the Library table, and will also have cards to insert in the bowl to be donated.
Bruce asked that everyone send him an estimate of the number of bowls they donated over the years, and their approximate value.
Bruce went to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and used his title as Doctor to talk directly with the people who oversee the project. Because of the lack of personnel, they cannot accept 35 bowls at a time. We are overwhelming them.
Folks asked ifwe could continue to get pictures of the recipients with their bowl. Bruce said that HIPP A rules make that impossible. However, if we get a release from the parents, we may be able to see pictures.
Show & Tell was next. Among the pieces displayed was a Viking Bowl made by Jerry Shugars after he attended an earlier class given by Glenn Lucas. Lucas happened to be watching, and deemed Jerry’s effort very well done!
We were reminded that the annual Stocking Stuffer would take place on December 17.
John Armstrong announced that next semester’s afternoon woodturning classes at Yavapai College were nearly full, and they are now working on mornings.
The meeting adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Marge Hunt, Secretary
