General Meeting Minutes
August 27 2022:
PAW General Meeting 2022-8-27
Prescott Area Woodtumers met at 6708 Corsair in the Prescott Airpark on Saturday August 27, 2022.
President Ken Allen called the meeting to order at 1 :00 p.m. Ken welcomed everyone. He said that today’s demo would be an IRD by Rudy Lopez, who would create a natural edge wing bowl. Next month the demonstration will be given by our own Larry O’Brien.
Membership Chairman Jay Loden reported that we now have 83 members. He introduced visitors and announced that visitor Jack McKenny, 102 years old, recently turned his first pen.
Ken Allen said that bowls donated for the Empty Bowls Event were on display in the middle area. After today’s demo there will be a short break, at which time a picture will be taken of the bowls and their creators. Folks were advised to contact Bruce Potter if they have more bowls to donate.
There is more donated wood available. It could be used to create something for a donation. Members are urged to select as much wood as they desire, and to donate an appropriate amount to the Treasury.
Event Manager Dean Humphrey gave a review of the Sale on Courthouse Square on August 6 and 7. There were no storms, even though storms had been forecast. Dean will send an email regarding the November sale at the Old Armory. PAW will take part in the Prescott Farmers Market on October 8. Demonstrators are needed for that day.
Program Director Ric Davis discussed the display at the Prescott Valley Public Library. Any items in that cabinet must be picked up on Friday morning September 9. Davis said that this month’s Tuesday demo (Tues. 8/27 /22) would be given by Dan Hall on embellishment and wood burning. Ric also asked for a show of hands regarding alternate times for Tuesday demos. About half of the members in attendance indicated they would be interested in an evening demo. About a quarter of those voting said that they would be willing to meet on an extra Saturday.
The next Chips & Grits Zoom meeting will be on September 14, 2022 at 8:30 a.m. It will feature Shop Tours using photos of various shops. Bruce Butler has put this program together.
Ken Allen said that any equipment for sale by non-members will be coordinated by Mark Oglesby.
Webmaster Susan Murphy said she needs more pictures and bios.
Kathy Allen said the next Woodettes luncheon would be at Terra Thai in Prescott on Thursday September 8.
Ken Allen announced that Brad Newman, Director ofYEI where we hold our meetings, has suffered a major stroke and is in a rehab facility. Members may wish to donate via a GoFundMe account. A link to the account will be in the next PAW Newsletter.
Program Director Ric Davis thanked Gene Perryman for arranging today’s program. Davis then introduced Rudy Lopez, who provided an Interactive Zoom meeting from his home in Florida. Rudy said there is a hand-out on his website to accompany today’s demo. He encouraged everyone to try new things, and to make it fun!
Lopez began with a crotch piece of wood. He turns his pieces thin. He turned an open form bowl with downturned wings. Making the piece thin means that it can turn and bend. Because he begins with a log, Lopez went over safety tips for cutting wood. As he was turning, he told us that he watches the top of the bowl, not where the tool touches. His demo was complete at 2:30 p.m.
The Empty Bowls picture showed that PAW had donated 73 bowls this year.
Show and Tell followed the demonstration.
The meeting adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Marge Hunt, Secretary
